University distance learning programs are an often overlooked option in the sea of commercial advertisements for web-based learning institutions. While there are plenty of educational institutions offering distance learning programs, some prospective students wish to have a recognizable university name stamped on their diploma; luckily there are a multitude of recognizable “name brand” university distance learning programs.
As the need for online options in all aspects of life becomes more prevalent, brick and mortar universities are realizing the growing need for offering online options to their students. University distance learning programs are a fast-growing alternative to students who find the they are in need of the flexibility of distance learning options, but still want the comfort of knowing that they are obtaining their degree from an institution that has been around for awhile, and has a solid reputation.
One thing to keep in mind is that, in order to get the well-known name on your diploma, you may have to give up some of the freedom that comes from other web-only based learning institutions. University distance learning programs are often only partially web-based, and still require some degree of physical presence for certain classes. It may, however, be worth the trade-off if your schedule can permit a partial presence. Highly esteemed universities offer programs with a blend of on- and off-campus modules; you can even get your MBA from Harvard Business School with this route. Your best bet is to look up your local state university and see what kind of online coursework is available, and how much of a commitment you will need to make to be on campus.
There are, however, some university distance learning programs that are solely online, as more and more universities are seeing the increasing need to expand what they offer. Universities such as Penn State and the University of Illinois are now offering completely online degree options, and more and more colleges are jumping on the bandwagon as they see what a big success this has become. Again, a little online research will reveal your options; just keep in mind that if you are obtaining your degree from an institution that is based in another state, your tuition may be higher because you are not a state resident. But if you are looking for a top-notch education from a reputable institution, those extra dollars may be well worth it!
