All About The Flexibility of Online Distance Learning

Summary:    With distance learning there are options in fixed class times, meaning that you log in to your virtual classroom at the same time as the other distance learning students taking the course, and there are online learning options that allow you to work more independently and at your own pace.

With distance learning there are options in fixed class times, meaning that you log in to your virtual classroom at the same time as the other distance learning students taking the course, and there are online learning options that allow you to work more independently and at your own pace.
There are benefits to both, which depend entirely on your lifestyle and learning style.

The largest benefit to a fixed class time is that you get more interaction with others. If you are the type who always learned best in an environment where you could bounce ideas off of others, participate in class discussions, or engage in dialogue with your professor at the time of the lesson, this might be your best option. Keep in mind that, like in-person courses, you are still required to adhere to specific class times, so if you are choosing the distance learning options due to scheduling conflicts, such as children or employment, this might not be your best option. But if your schedule is flexible and you like a bit more interaction, this type of course may be perfect for you.

If your lifestyle has you up and at them from morning until night, then a distance learning course with a flexible schedule is probably your best bet. Remember that, unlike the fixed schedule courses, flexible courses (also called asynchronous or “open schedule” classes) are much more independent so require a high level of discipline. Also, you will not have as liberal access to your classmates and professors, so if you are doing your coursework at 10pm at night, you might find yourself stuck with no one to assist you.

There are also some courses that offer the best of both worlds; where you must log in to class at a fixed time, but you can complete your coursework on your own time. This format might work best for those who have a tight schedule, but would still like the benefits of catching up with classmates, discussing key topics in the lesson, or requesting help with an assignment. The biggest benefit of all of these being, you get to choose which works best for you, and receive a customized learning experience.
