Online course offerings simply use the computer as the primary tool of communication. Online courses use the vast power of the web as the primary tool for delivering information, used equally by the student and the instructor to convey key course materials.
An online course generally will not require a text book and all communication with the professor will be conducted through a course web-site. All written work and even tests may be completed online, giving the student and the instructor incredible flexibility. Such offerings even allow for other students in the course to interact with another and to work on projects together. The only time constraints with an on-line course occur when you use the chat room to either talk directly to other students or your instructor.
Again, the key element for considering distance learning is the ability to have access to courses on a schedule that is conducive to the student’s needs and to be able to take such educational offerings from the comfort of their own home if possible. In the past, to earn collegiate credit, you would often have to give up both aspects of that flexibility, especially if your goal was to earn an advanced degree. But now, with the internet, online college courses are available from almost every major college or university in America, with a variety of schools offering complete programs delivered entirely over the web.
