All About MIT’s Free Online Courses

Summary:    With the creation of MIT’s free online courses, the game has been completely changed in the world of distance learning. MIT, with the simple philosophy that higher education is a right for everyone, has made over 2,000 of their courses available as free online courses for anyone to take. That’s right; you can take MIT’s courses online for free! The free online classes are all web-based and reflect both undergraduate and graduate coursework. Something to keep in mind, however, is that this is not a degree program. This is totally self-guided and there is no access to any of the MIT faculty.

MIT, with the simple philosophy that higher education is a right for everyone, has made over 2,000 of their courses available as free online courses for anyone to take. The free online classes are all web-based and reflect both undergraduate and graduate coursework. Something to keep in mind, however, is that this is not a degree program. This is totally self-guided and there is no access to any of the MIT faculty. While you can complete as much of the reading and coursework as you like, you will not get a degree at any point from this program. However, if you are looking to supplement existing education, or are unable to afford a full education, or are simply looking to learn more, this may be just the option for you.

Since you do not receive a degree through this program, there is no enrollment required. MIT’s free online courses may not have all of the content that the paid courses provide, but the amount that is offered is comprehensive enough to gain an excellent understanding of the course work. On top of that, some of the courses even offer video lectures to offer a classroom-like experience. Among those taking advantage of the expansive bank of knowledge offered by MIT’s free online classes are high school students and teachers; finding it an excellent way to not only prepare students for college, but also supplement students who are advancing well beyond their high school coursework.

Again, it is very important to keep in mind that this is not a program that will yield a diploma, but it does offer an unprecedented opportunity to access the invaluable lessons received by students enrolled in the full MIT curriculum.
