All About Distance Education Loans

Summary:    Yes! You can get distance education loans for your distance learning program! In fact, distance education loans can even be had through the Federal student loans programs!

Many Americans are discovering the benefits of earning a degree online, otherwise known as “distance learning”. Distance learning allows an individual to access a learning institution and earn a degree without physically attending the campus. Through distance learning, most or all classes and programs are performed remotely, allowing for flexibility and convenience for the online student. However, distance learning is still a costly venture and that is where the government and private student loans can assist you in achieving your degree.

The first step in obtaining a distance education loan is to check with your institution of choice and find out what type of financial assistance programs they offer. If the institution you have selected is accredited by local and regional agencies then you will likely be offered the same government financial aid programs as a student who physically attends the university.

The next step is to fill out what is called a Federal Student Aid Application. Once the application is reviewed by your school it can be determined what financial aid programs will be available to you. There are two primary sources of government student loans for students seeking distance education loans: the Family Education Loan Program and the Federal Direct Student Loan Program. There is also a Federal Perkins Loan available, however, the Federal Perkins Loan is reserved for students with an extreme need for financial aid due to very low-income status.

The loan amounts are based on several factors, with income being the greatest deciding factor. Once you have earned your degree the loan must be paid back over several years. A government loan typically provides the most reasonable rates and terms and is highly recommended for students.

A student can also pursue private loans for a distance learning degree. However, a loan from a private bank can incur much higher interest rates with less reasonable terms as compared to a government-provided student loan.

If you have made the decision to obtain a distance learning degree do not be discouraged by the costs. With the assistance of your chosen institution of learning, and utilizing both government and private loans, you can achieve your distance learning degree.
