Human Resources is a popular field in the realm of distance learning and among all the existing professional HR institutions, CIPD is one of the oldest and largest. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is an England-based association for those in the field of Human Resource Management (Some of their previous names include the Welfare Workers’ Association (WWA), and the Institute of Labour Management (ILM).). While it has operated under its current name since 2000, the organization has been around since 1913. With over 135,000 members in over 120 countries, CIPD is a very large organization.
CIPD offers training and certification in many areas within the realm of Human Resources such as HR management, coaching, recruitment and employment law. Their distance learning program, called “Flexible Learning,” offers a unique blend of online and monthly courses, as well as in-person workshops that allow you to work with your instructors and classmates. All of the study locations are in the UK, therefore students considering CIPD’s distance learning option would need to physically access these locations on a monthly basis.
Because most of the Flexible Learning program is distance based, CIPD offers constant access to the course facilitators who are all HR and L&D (learning and development) practitioners. The program is still largely self-paced, so self-discipline to stay on task is key. To aid in this, you will also have access to your classmates in an online community so that you can compare notes, request assistance and plan outside study groups.
Additionally, the online forum provides other resources such as textbooks, journals and articles written by CIPD professionals.
